It's quite strange how easily people change their mind when their favourite company does the same. I always liked ps+ and didn't care for multiplayer, so not sure how I would have reacted if that weren't the case. At least with Sony I think there was a smooth transition, imho.

You nailed it. Sony handled the situation masterfully. Instead of erecting a paywall like Microsoft, Sony took an already popular product in PS+ and massaged online gameplay into it. Sony sold the idea as a game subscription service that also provides online play, instead of an online paywall that also provided a few games. It was brilliant, and it worked. A lot of PS4 customers were actually thankful for it. 

Nintendo should have paid attention and done the same, if it wanted to make online paywalls more digestible. It should have established a "free" games service years ago and then folded into it online play.
