Perhaps you should read the book instead of the title. He doesn't actually claim the universe happened out of nothing, but rather, came out of an unknown that, when over-simplified, would effectively be "nothing".

He has been rightfully mocked for that his invention of a "nothing" that is "something".

Still, the fact remains that he wasn't claiming the universe came from nothing.
