People only feel pride in their race/orientation/disability when others make them feel like they should feel bad for it.

I drink water a lot. But if a large group of people around me was telling me how awful I am for drinking water, and I'm worth less because of it. I'd think, "Fuck you, I like drinking water and proud of it, bitch" 

Silly example but I hope the idea came across..

Then you should be proud of the fact that you continue drinking water despite the pressure around you, not at the fact that you drink water.
