From 1995 through 1996, two flagship entries in the Mario franchise were launched.

While both were blockbuster extravaganzas from the same series, they were very different games. One was one of the last hurrahs of the SNES and the 2D era, while the other was a pioneer of the 3D era and a launch title for a new system. One remixed and reinvented an established rulebook, the other wrote a whole new one from scratch.

Even two decades later, both remain among the most beloved games Nintendo has ever produced.
