Still, Rio should not have been awarded the Olympic games that money put into the Olympics clearly could've been used to better people's lives in other areas.

When Rio was awarded the games in 2009, the economic and political situation were different. They were in a much more favorable situation. I think it was the right decision at the time to give them the games.

I see that reasoning all the time. We shouldn't do this or that because there are so many poor people, so much misery in the world. Well guess what? Even if the world spent every single cent on poor people, there would still be poverty and misery. I think in a world with so much suffering, we need events like this to take our minds off of the everyday problems we have. People need things to aspire to, need to have a reason to dream, to feel proud of what humans are able to accomplish.

All those cities and countries who applied to host the Olymics and didn't get the games, I'm sure the money they would have used on the games have been spent on these "more important things" (since they didn't get the games, that money was used elsewhere). Yet these countries still have poverty, misery, etc. I don't think it changes much.
