I'm not sure it would have meant a lot more profit, if they had already started on something new, they would have to stop with that and go back to it. Crap is sometimes more profitable than good stuff.

Sorry, I'm just so sick about people complaining about companies wanting to earn money.

 At the same time, crap may earn them more in the short term, but in the long term, it could dilute their brand.  Harmonix was counting on their brand to keep them afloat against Activision keeping the Guitar Hero trademark, and it probably worked.  If they ruin their brand name through shoddy releases, that could be a larger loss than Shenmue had in the long run.
