I don't think thirdy party don't appeal to Nintendo fans. The fans keep buying the consoles DESPITE losing all thirdy party content. The customer that don't want to lose thirdy party games stopped buying Nintendo consoles since the N64. That's why Nintendo's share eroded: they lost a big chunk of potential public. With the Wii, they gathered a different public with casuals. They ended up losing them to smartphones.

If they want to sell well, they need to get back this public by receiving a steady and thrusty 3rd party support. And that means making everyone sure that the NX will get ALL games. To achieve that, they will need to offer advantages for the softhouses to get support. Like lower royalties or something like that.

They won't get decent sales without that, unless they find a niche again and that's hard. Their performances with the NES and SNES were fuelled by third parties. They lost them and lost share. They managed to keep things going with portables because they are usually secondary devices to a home console and also because thirdy party games are weaker in this segment.
