Nintendo is never leaving the console market. Even in their worst showings, read GC and N64, they still were very profitable. A business exists to make money and as long as that is happening they will continue. So, let's say Wii rules this gen, as all signs thus far are pointing to that outcome. Why in the world would they walk away? Their investors would probably have them killed and their stock value would plummet.

On the other hand if the Wii had failed and been selling sub-PS3 levels and even worse than GC, I would still think Nintendo would have kept making consoles. Why? They would have still made a profit. The Wii from day one was making money. That is why they ditched HD. To ensure that no matter the outcome of the Wii, it would still make money. Thus, giving them the ability to continue to make consoles and games.
