Soviet special forces stormed the residence of the President of Afghanistan, killed him, and declared someone else the new leader.  How is that legitimate? 

That whole ordeal began with inter-party strife, which saw the first president (who was friendly to the USSR) assassinated. The rest you can probably guess.
