While some highly anticipated games have disappointed quite considerably, many companies have dropped the ball in big ways, and each console was a bit slow to start delivering, from an overall design standpoint this is one of the best generations yet. As much as I enjoyed 7th gen, the near death of once great genres and dominance of the linear scripted corridor shooter were tragic events that took most of the gen to shake out of. Now things are becoming more diverse again, with games opening up their design (more open world games than ever, f.e.), old genres seeing new and exciting entries, unique and risky indies becoming bigger than ever, and no one genre really monopolizing the market. 8th gen certainly has plenty of its own problems, but there hasn't been this much variety in a long time - if ever.
