Not only would people hurt themselves (and possibly others), but it would lead to excessive use of antibiotics, which hurts everyone, because it increases chances that bacterial strains develop resistance. (Granted, the excessive use of antibiotics in agriculture is a much bigger contributor to the increasing amount of resistant bacterial straints.)
