Imho Jesse was fantastic. He wasn't really Lex,  he was more or less his own character. This may factored into disappointment for a lot of people. I totally agree that Jess' performance is arguably the best in the movie.

But Lex Luthor is supposed to be a person who is charismatic and genius. The Lex in the movie is like a mad scientist or a lunatic. Maybe the change is for the better though, who knows. 

Hopefully the pacing of the sequel will improve.

Depends on which version of Luthor. Luthor is a mad scientist at the origin.
