Just curious, but why do people feel as if their biological gender does not describe their actual "gender"? is there any science that can explain the mindset behind a transgender person?

I'd rather not assume and potentially become a douche to everyone...so I'll play it safe and not jump to any conclusions.

As with sexual orientation, sexual identity cannot be explained by hard science (see this for lots of thesis that went nowhere : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_transsexualism )

I guess you could look at psychology and sociology for an explanation about the mindset, mabe anthropology and looking into the societies that have a tradition of transvestism (lots of them, through theatre mostly).

History (yet another "soft" science) shows this mindset is not new : Georges Sand, born Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin,  famous french novelist and one of Chopin's lover, was described as "dressing up like a man, walking like a man and speaking like a man".
