Star Wars isn't the only movie to suffer from this.
The Matrix, which stole a lot of Episode I's thunder in 1999 is another story of the same thing.
The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions have much more elaborate fight scenes ... Neo is fighting 100000 Agent Smiths!
But the fight scenes are stupid and silly, they lack any of the danger and tension the original Matrix had where they did a great job in making the Agents seem like superhuman killing machines and that fighting with them was an inevitable defeat/death. That creates something called TEN-SION, which leads to DRA-MA ... something you kinda need in a good movie.
