Yeah, it's a pretty stupid assumption in my opinion that they are not competing against each other. Even though the HD consoles are more expensive, they certainly are in the same price range and most people only buy 1 console per generation. As far as Nintendo has claimed that they are expanding the market(which they are), the truth is that a lot of people buying a Wii now are people that didn't buy a Gamecube last gen but were gamers nonetheless. What those people were playing? Most likely an XBox or a PS2.
