The story seemed pretty typical Dragon Quest to me - demon conquering the world, hero stands up to demon, small story arcs villages and towns in between, etc, etc. The only thing odd about it were the customization and multiplayer features. Can you verbalize your feeling? 

It was more the lack of static party and NPCs. The only one you really dealt with often was the fairy who was just a horrendous character. It was lacking character developement of the MC and your party members, so I felt very detached from the events of the game as I lead my puppets through.
