Standby mode is like your DVR being off. It's not really off. It's on standby, ready to record or do whatever. It's still running though. The PS3 didn't have that type of standby. So it had to fully shut it off and on to do it. That's the only difference. It's what Wii U does. There's real no benefit. Except that the orange light won't be on. Plus, that's how the USB plugs still charge your stuff. If needed. But you can reduce power consumption, by turning that off. If that is what you really are going for.
