You do gain exp from killing enemies. its not alot. Most of your exp will come from doing main quest, side quest, witcher contracts and other side missions. The stuff on the board is mixture of side quests, killing monster and witcher contract. they are categorised for you . expand the categories to see all the quest you have accepted
