I just dodge everything and quickly move in with a few hits and dodge again. Absolutely nothing can hit you if you time the dodge correctly, doesn't matter how close you are or what the attack is. 

Kind of reminds me of Monster Hunter with the timing, you have to be absolutely flawless if you don't want to get hit.
