Eh, I think you have trouble noticing because you are a bit emotionally invested in the whole The Order 1886 thing. 1. I am not sure about the exact percentage, but 50% isn't that bad for a ballpark number, probably a bit too low. For digital copies that go for the same price as boxed copies, the margin is obviously higher because there's no retailer cut. 2. I can't give any really good estimates for the overall budget (development + marketing) because these things can wildly differ for AAA games. The one thing I am sure about is that it's highly unlikely that 1m will be a satisfying result for Sony, because the break-even points had already risen to that mark early in the seventh generation and they kept increasing from there. Actually, there's another thing I am quite sure about, and that is that The Order 1886 did probably cost more to make than The Last of Us. As far as I know, Ready at Dawn created their engine from scratch while Naughty Dog had already a framework thanks to their Uncharted games on top of having more experience with titles of such a scale, meaning that ND could achieve a better result in less time. Higher efficiency translates to lower costs. |
no way they are getting 50% of a 60$ game. 10% to 20% if they are lucky.
michael pachter explained it once (I know pachter, but he should have a better idea of this than we do)
he broke it down to the publisher, sony for releasing the game on their platform ,distribution , marketing , seller and the developer. those are all the people who get a piece of the pie.
might be that they are getting a better deal because sony is the platform holder and the publisher but pachter said that from a 60$ the developer normally sees 10$.
which sounds realistic if you for example compare it to the music industry where the artist gets around 3$ from a 15$ cd sale
all that in mind I guess if they are getting somewhere in the ballpark of breaking even they will produce a sequel just to make use of everything they already created.
