Well there had to be a reason as to why it's not so fondly remembered compared to other JRPGs that were on the PS2 ... 


Look at the sales. The first game sold well, but the second game killed the series. Literally. After the second game flopped critically(and possibly commercially), Namco gave them one last game to make, and then pulled the plug on the series. 

 

I feel as though what xenosaga was lacking, were the moments that drew people in. There were no moments that put you at the edge of your seat. The third game had a few of those(and boy were they good), but the other games lacked them. 

I feel as though it just didn't do well enough to draw people in. The games had an awesome story, but the problem was, in order to get to the bulk of the story, you had to go through the first two games. 

 

Had some really good trailers though.
