Hmmm, Pikmin 3 is a really good answer. Although I don't think the way I used the GamePad most of the time necessitated its existance -- when using it as a map, tapping the touchscreen paused the game, so it's hardly different from having a 'map' button on the controller.

You HAVE to go back and play Pikmin 3!! The reason the game pauses when you touch the map is that it's how you give out orders.
I had three different Pikmin groups doing three different things at once because of this. You could tap a character and send their group to get fruit and have another character going after stray Pikmin while the third group explores the world. They explain this but during my first playthrough, I overlooked it. After a few hours, I figured it out and suddenly, Pikmin was a GotY contender!!

I know and did all of this. It would be no more difficult if the map was on the TV instead.

Oh well. It made the game for me. I was using Wii remotes and only used the pad for giving orders. Thought it was friggin great.
