Well, the reason is that you are mashing buttons. With zero shield stun and fast rolls and spot dodges, the game heavily rewards defensive gameplay. Not as much as Brawl, but still enough for me to detest its gameplay.
OT:
Smash 64 - Captain Falcon (by far the most satisfying combos), followed by Link and Fox
Melee - Captain Falcon/Ganondorf (see above), followed by Falco
Brawl - Ganondorf (Only played this game casually. Made me lose interest in the series until I rediscovered its previous enries.)
Smash 4 - Ganondorf (Makes it easy to exploit the game's defensive nature with his strong punish game.)
I really wanted Captain Falcon to work, but without his combos he is not Captain Falcon anymore.
