Can't you log in a offline version of the game to play it alone or with local multiplayer? I'm asking this because of FF11, as I totally missed it and so I'll never be able to play that game? FF11 is still online (+10yrs?), and is still charging a monthly fee. There is still a lot of people playing it. A new expansion came out for it earlier this year.
It is these subscription that pays for maintenance, ingame GM support, updates, patches and expansions.
