Anyway, I understand where you're coming from, but even when you only play with Pokémon you like it's still very possible to create a good team. I never thought I could be decent competitively because of this, but especially in this generation with the different breeding mechanics, EV training and Mega Evolutions, I was able to create a pretty good team with 4 of my favorite Pokémon and 2 that I still like (though not as much as the other ones).

All you need is a little bit of effort and belief. Never trust Smogon tiers - they're good for you to have an idea of how things work, but it's fine to have lower tier Pokémon. For example, my team has 1 UU and 1 NU 'mons, and they can both be pretty good sometimes - as good as being able to singlehandedly win battles every now and then. Sure, you need to have some good OU ones, and if there's not at least 2/3 from that tier that you feel like using, it's going to be hard to be competitive.

I should probably also add that I'm pretty shite at Pokemon games.
