I agree, there are also instances of bands that aren't poular in their time becoming popular once people discover them years later.

There's also the issue that the farther back you go, the less likely a lousy band would be to even be recorded. Nowadays, anyone can record an album. But 80 years ago? How about all the shitty baroque composers whose works were buried beneath the legacy of Bach and the like?
