I think that'd be lame. Sonic and Mario games are simply played at 2 different speeds. I GUESS sonic could work in a Mario game, but I just wouldn't buy it working the other way around. I wish they would just make an open world sonic game, with some Zelda inspired combat. Then you could simply show of Sonic's speed with actual travel instead of making high speed cutscenes that get old fast.

In order to keep both gameplay styles intact, they could simply do it like Sonic Generations did, where one character does one level and the other does the next. It'd be cool if they could somehow mesh both together, but this method works fine too.

Also if what you're suggesting is just having sonic running on an open field, well... that would be uber boring! Just running endlessly is gonna get old quick. That's why they never made a game like that and instead fill all their levels up with obstacles. Sonic is awesomeness not only for it's sense of speed but also because of the fast paced action and quick reflexs needed to maneuver through levels succesfully. But that's just my view on the matter!
