It has nothing to do with trust. Many people don't trust Microsoft in America but have very little choice choice but to tolerate them (ie: Windows). Tolerate is the key word.

Microsofts success in America is based off of three things:

1) America pays attention to he who yells loudest. Sony cannot outspend Microsoft at marketing campaigns in the US. They are the official brand of the NFL in the US, which means the dude bros by association will look at the XBox One first just by casual male target commercialism.

2) Microsoft  is equal to Sony outside of Japan when it comes to third party. The majority of gamers who buy consoles in America buy third party rather than first party. Microsoft has a more calculated relationship with third parties which gives them the edge on marketing perception. They fight in a "battle of inches" type of way. They will use timed exclusivity and DLC to sway you to buying third party games on their console over another.

3) A good percentage of Americans psychologically believe that paying more for a consoles equates to quality. Even though you'll also find that they pay for whats cheaper, many will applaud themselves for buying the more expensive version of whatever product exists.
