Looking at their present consoles i think we can assume they have realized the importance of brand recognition (both the 3DS and WiiU are following the same brand as their successor).
The PS4/X1's launch line ups weren't that much better than the WiiU's, but they sold so much purely on being "next PlayStation and Xbox". The WiiU would likely have found a similar source of success had the Wii no been dead by the time it arrived.
