As has been said numerous times already they didn't need to create a new engine or go through the teething process to get the title out the door. GT5 made some serious bank, GT6 will just be the cherry on the cake. Even if it only sells 4 million, it's probably making Sony a lot of money.

The other option would be to jump straight to next gen, release GT6 on the PS4 in 2014-2015 while the install base is still rather low, and have another situation where there is up to 5 years between GT releases.

This way, they can probably get GT7 out on the PS4 by holidays 2016, with a 30m+ install base, less competition for Sony's other racing titles (Driveclub), more time with the new tech, and a longer period for consumers to get excited about a next gen GT. I think it was the right choice, if even initially it didn't look like it.
