IF you let ANYTHING run outside its rated temperature its lifespan will decrease. Comparing the PS3 to the PS4 operating temps is apples to oranges as they are different architectures etc. The different ratings certainly does not mean the PS4 will be less reliable than the PS3 or the XB1.

You are chasing something that does not exist and you look stupid doing so.

So I will try to show you here.

- The operating temperature of the PS4 is 5-35 degrees C this is referred to as Ta or ambient temperature. 

- Now lets say Sony wanted to achieve 30,000 hour life from a PS4, which means that it will run at maximum output for just over 3 years.

- lets also say that Sony uses Kick ass Capacitors with a life of 8000 hours at 105 degrees C.

Now solve the problem.

- note, every 10 degree reduction in Capacitor temperature will increase the capacitors life by 2. ( basic approximation)

-If the Capacitors were running at 95 degrees, the life would be 16k hours

-If the Capacitors were running at 85 degrees, the life would be 32k hours

Answer, the caps are running a 85 degrees C, internally to achieve a lifetime of 30,000 hours ( hotz)

Question, why would a Company reduce the operating temperature of a device?

- To reduce cost or

- To meet the life requirements

So, The operating temperature (ta) is 5-35 degrees C, While the Max Case temp (Tc) would be closer to 80 degrees. ( not over this, as the regulations of touchable plastic temps cannot be higher than this i will suggest it will be 65 degrees C as a guess) Internal temperature could be close to 85 degrees C around the heat-sinks etc. in which the Capacitors are located close by.

Here is another thought. The power consumption of the Ps4 is 250W. This means just to convert the power to usable voltages on the motherboard there is already approximately 40Watts of heat loss ( inside the unit). This plus all the other losses over the circuit will lead to a truck load of heat generated inside the box.

 

Compared to the PS3 Slim which original was released at 250W, the PS4 case is 27% smaller while still requiring to dissipate approximately the same heat! That's equal to putting 67w more heat into the PS3 slim. The heat has to go somewhere or we need to reduce the life or in this case the maximum ambient temperature.

Just take a look at how many people said the PS3 Slim ran hot!

(BTW, Heat is Heat regardless of chip design, it still needs to be removed, while heat adjusts lifetime )

 


Shit Man Sony are so stupid! They have no expertise in designing hardware or electronics. I mean have you ever purchased a Vaio laptop and

 seen the size of those bricks??? Damn they should hire the expertise of Nidan as he knows far more than their amateur engineers. Nidan is a fully qualified heat dissipation engineer!
