These are custom designed boxes. Completely different.

Id rather trust an engineer of said product.

But look, every single event has every single type of console in a glass box. Xbox One, Ps2, Ps3, Xbox 360 etc etc.

Something happened to this PS4 heat or otherwise. Being in a glass box isnt unusual to PS4 at these events.

Bottom line is. I hope the early adopters are fine.

There won't be overheating issues in the retail units, why? Because the Consoles are using parts which origionated from the PC space which have had this kind of protection mechanisms for years.
Two things will happen when thermals get out of control.
1) The processors will lower their clockspeeds and/or voltages.
2) Once the temperatures reaches a certain threshold, they will shut down before damage is incurred.

Don't kid yourself though, this isn't a Sony technology it's an AMD one, the Xbox One will feature the same thing.

AMD specifies a 61'C maximum recommended temperature for all it's processors in it's whitepapers, which is pretty low considering they can handle 70-80'C, Sony may have told the system via firmware to "shut down" at that threshold, which is better than the alternative.

If anything, this generation of consoles should prove to be more reliable than any other prior generations of systems, which should be great, essentially any hardware failures should not ever result from overheating.
Other components however may, like cheap solder, bad capacitors etc'.

Even if a fan dies, the console won't overheat to the point of no return, just replace the $5 fan and you're up and running again.
