With less of the system being on the surface, wouldn't you get better ventilation? Also, for the Drives in the system, we've had Blu-Ray for 7+ years now (other optical drives for much longer) I think getting discs to read while vertical shouldn't be a problem, unless they did a poor job constructing them. Hard Drives shouldn't even matter, since they're basically Laptop HDDs, which are made for any kind of awkward orientation. They also have sensors for determining any shocks which will prevent the head from crashing into the disks by parking them.
Perhaps they mean there would be more wear on the laser reading the discs, that's the only thing I see.
