In early 2001 SEGA ended production of the Sega Dreamcast and shocked the world and their loyal fan base. SEGA continued forward with game production and published title after title for what is considered “The Big 3” in today’s gaming industry. Nintendo, Microsoft, and SONY.
After rebuilding, SEGA has once again made its self into a solid competitor but they have made good smart decisions staying out of the hardware market. Interestingly enough though SEGA has seemed to team up with their old rival Nintendo lately and even gave them exclusive rights to what looks like Sonic’s best looking title in years (Sonic: Lost World).
Now today we have not one announcement from SEGA, but two. The first announcement is that SEGA has bought ATLUS which owns many important intellectual properties including Catherine and the Persona franchise.
What is even bigger though is that it has just now been announced that SEGA has officially partnered up with Nintendo making SEGA and all of their franchises exclusive to Nintendo consoles.
SEGA’s chairman Hajime Hatomi’s official statement. “We are excited with what the future holds with us and Nintendo in the coming years. Nintendo has been a great partner to us and we hope you are as excited as we are and our partnership.”
So there you have it. Even though this isn’t the official Sega Dreamcast 2, in many ways this is just like SEGA getting back into the hardware business. Only this time instead of going head to head with Nintendo, they will be partnering with them and the stagnate WiiU.
