Isn't that kind of the point, though? Their world is a fucked up place, and it's kill or be killed. Joel, at least at that point, is more of an anti-hero than a hero.

The Last of Us probably handels this in the one of the better ways. It is just other games just seem like excessive overdose of firing guns and killing. Max Payne kills around 700 people in one night. That is just bit too hard to digest when the player is one firing his gun. 

Also there is Spec Ops: The Line where they give you strong weapons to shread enemy players into shreads. After you are done that they make you question your decisions while there was no real option to handle the situation much differently. 

Still would be nice if we had big titles coming from developers other than Nintendo where we have less bloodshed.
