In Last of Us the early violence illustrates their world. Joel is a dark cynical character when we meet him. In the game when I killed men in front of Ellie should would say "holy!" or other reactions to the brutality. We see through her the shock of violence and the desensitized feelings after prolonged exposure.
I think Last of Us touched on violence as well as any game I have ever played. I felt the visceral combat and kill animations far more than other games.
