In the late time I saw in the forum a lot of guys saying "PS4 GPU is based in a Mobile GPU... so it is weaker compared to Desktops GPU". I always thought if that guy knows what he's talking about?

I resolved to make clear something FACTs about PC GPUs and kill this MYTH.

On PC architecture there is no real difference in the GPU used in Desktops and Mobile by nVidia and AMD, in fact the chips are exactly the same... no more units, or difference in the physical chip itself.

So you ask me... what the difference between Desktop and Mobile GPUs? The awnsers are...

  • Drivers
  • GPU/Memory clock

The first difference is the driver for Mobile is optimized to POWER SAVING... I mean change power states to use the less power possible and economize battery from your notebook (or other equipment)... and the Desktop is optimized to MAX PERFORMANCE without care about power saving because the Desktop is always puggled in the energy supply.

The second difference is the clock... so AMD and nVidia choose the clock to have the best performece/power saving scenario for Mobiles and choose the high clock possible for Desktops.

So there are no diffence istead Drivers and Clock? No, and I can share a little more with you... the Quadro (Nvidia) and FirePro (AMD) GPUs uses the same GPU for Mobile/Desktop with drivers optimizes for workstation and apps like 3DMax, Maya, etc. And the nVidia Titan uses the same GPU found in the Tesla GPU and again the difference is the drives optimized to GPGPU in Teslas GPUs.

Are you saying the Desktop, Mobile and Pro GPUs are the same? Bingo... hell yes.

Some exemples:

Radeon HD 8870 (OEM Only)
Radeon HD 7970M
Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition
Radeon HD 7850
Radeon Sky 500
FirePro W5000
FirePro W7000
FirePro S7000
FirePro R5000

All there GPUs cards uses the sames GPU...

Pitcairn, 28nm, 212mm², 1280:80:32 (full enable units)

* HD 7850, W5000, R5000 have some units disabled but the chip have all of them... there are even some cases you can enable these units through BIOS updates *

So stop with this nonsense about "PS4 have a mobile GPU" because there are no difference between Mobile, Desktop and Pro GPUs.

Any sugestion or correction... please tell me.
