Most of these comparisons are 6th vs 7th generation, which isn't really fair, since the PS3 install base was much smaller than PS2's during the releases, and only the combined PS360 was comparable, and in some comparisons smaller, which is why you see comparable or smaller results on the 7th gen multiplatform vs PS2.

Sony had a lot of issues all by themselves, but isn't one of the key reasons it didn't sell like the PS2 did was because many of it's key franchises turned MP? Its a self fullfilling profecy. MS told Devs in order to make back dev costs(which had greatly risen from 6th gen) they would need to go multi. They didn't really but because they started to do it, it split userbases and fanbases alike. You would have gotten a PS3 for FFXIII, but now you no longer HAD to, same for GTA, DMC, Tekken, etc. People buy consoles because of Exclusives. When you make every game for everything, this generation is what you get.

Now the truth is finally coming to light, proving that going MP and making every title Multiplatform is really part of the problem.
