Hmm, I wont say "the same". But they will have a similar weak start. The one thing that may hurt the new Box and the PS3 initially could be YLOD and RROD. At the moment I think that it would be better to wait for 2 years and get the console after the inevitable redesign and price cut. Being an early adopter turned out to be bad... you pay the higher price and have the risk that your console may break down.
It is the same with the Vita. I bought it last christmas because I got it for € 150 special offer. But I am sure that next year the first redesign will come... Thats the same thing with the DS/3DS. Having the feeling that you will get a better device if you wait for 6 months really hurts your propensity to buy the product now.
