Considering that it's been stated by representatives of Kojima Studios, yes, I believe it. Because Kojima Studios stories are also very stupid and tongue-in-cheek.

Your belief is not required.

So basically you mean to tell me that a well respected high production game focused on story like MGS is stupid? (1) That story is not cannon and I am glad it is not. (2) I would say then that this is twice that Kojima studios has failed Hideo Kojima. First they failed him on gameplay and now story.  (3)

1. Yes, absolutely, Metal Gear Solid is almost aggressively stupid. Fun, endearing, and it has moments of being well-written, but still stupid. That doesn't mean it's bad. Vanquish is stupid but fantastic, for instance.

2. It is absolutely canon.

3. Kojima himself picked Platinum Games for this project because they were a perfect fit for what he wanted and he's reportedly very happy with how the gameplay is turning out.

1. Vanquish like all of Platinum Games titles has great arcade style gameplay, and its only appropriate that Sega published them because they always had great arcade style games in their first party lot. Platinum Games achillies heel will is and always has been their stories and boring characters. They are not interesting and the niche that even pay attention to them (myself added) are the only ones who get anything out of their games. Look at Anarchy Reigns, its the most disjointed Powerstone wannabe brawler that I've ever seen and it does not look balanced at all. The characters are not well thought out and do not compliment one another in the slightest. Hell, most of the characters are under the radar characters which will causes this game to sell dismally low. I am not afraid to speak the truth about one of my favorite developers, I accept their flaws.

Metal Gear Solid is the major franchise that got people to focus on the more serious side of games with political warfare undertones and risky infiltration situations, sure there were some quips (as I said before). Never before had a console game had that level of production value of story and Kojima set a standard not just for the east to catch up with but also the west.

2. I get that now, and thats what hurts the credibility of it even more. Kojima didnt write the script or even co write it, so this worries me. I dont like anything that is serious being put in the hands of Platinum Games. I've never taken that company seriously outside of their wacky arcade style gameplay mechanics. I was perfectly fine when they said it was a spin-off, but looking at that wacky shit it looks nothing like nothing in the MG universe.

3. I know Kojima picked Platinum Games. As I said before, he was forced to because he let his team do this project and stepped back into a supervisor position rather than director, while he supervised other Konami titles like Castlevania to make sure to production level and quality was high. His team failed him without his director status and he publically humiliated them by making a video package that clearly separated him from his team. MGS5 looks like its on its way, and I will play Reveangence but I wont take it seriously at all. Can't wait for some post cold war action in MGS5 the story looks tense. I need to play MGS: Peacewalker, its been on my HDD on my PS3 for a while.
