You're pretty much SOL with Sony unless you want to pay good money to fix their faulty work, best thing to do is find a friend that knows how to repair consoles and just find the right part.

 I agree with most of what you're saying, but perhaps he should exhaust his options with Sony, first.  Once he has someone crack the case and attempt a repair, all bets are off with Sony.
