With all the recent religion threads, I thought I'd offer a fresh subject of discussion.

From a religious point of view man has had religion since creation. Obviously other animals don't have religion because they are inferior to us.

Religion from an atheist's point of view was crafted by man simply to try and explain the world. So if this is the case, how advanced were humans when the first signs of religion started? Was it fairly recent with the invention of writing or does it have origins even before the discovery of fire? This then leads to why don't other advanced species have signs of religion, or do they?

I have my own thoughts on all of this but I'd like to see what you guys think first.
