I think most of the Dreamcast comparisons are made invalid by a failure to recognize why the DC failed. Sega was broke. They didn't have the cash. Sega had decided to pull the plug on the DC before the GC and Xbox launched.

Don't forget that Sega had alienated many of their most loyal fans with the Sega CD, Sega 32x, and Sega Saturn.

True, but the Wii wasn't really that much of a love letter to die hard Nintendo fans. The lack of third party support made many people choose one of the HD twins instead. I know it's not the same situation, but that's why I said that I would make the comparisson with the DC at times, and not really all the time.

It's interesting because I don't think the Wii really dominated the so called "7th Gen". If you look at a chart of the 6th Gen, PS2 sold more than GC, XBOX and DC, combined. However, when looking at the 7th Gen chart, the Wii falls behind the PS3 and the 360 when combined. It kindda shows that the Wii may have the biger numbers, but the alternative of an HD system is biger than what the Wii did.

So I don't really think the Wii really has a "triumph" here, or if so, it's a bittersweet triumph, because it was achieved by sales to casual gamers, and since the tablets and phones have pretty much overtaken that market, but I digress...

Nintendo has to recover the hearts of dedicated players who migrated to either of the HD twins, and I think they really are going to need that the system can handle 8th Gen multi-platform tittles. I still find many games that, when the trailer ends, in the bottom I see: "XBOX 360", "PC", "PS3" but no "Wii U".

But then again, it's a little early. The interesting part for me (I know I went all over the place with the post...) is to see how many developers take the U as next gen, and what developers (as errorpwns stated) see it only as a bridge. I don't think the U can sell as well as the Wii based on casual tittles. That third party support in the next 3 years or so is going to be VITAL to determinate how well/bad will the U really do.

That's why I'm really interested on its specs. I don't know if a Radeon card of the 5000 series (even if it's custom) would be enough. The system has a good amount of RAM (or so it seems). So, I don't really take any side here (hater or Nintendo fanboy). It's going to be a fun ride, and I can't wait to see what will happen.
