Well that's a huge generalisation, but as I don't have the entire convo and context I'm going to reserve judgement. I will say that the Japanese industry has suffered somewhat this generation. I think it's down to the extra competition from Western and PC devs entering the console space. Japanese developers have been forced into introducing with new ideas to compete, but unfortunately sometimes those ideas have the opposite effect; alienating traditional fans whilst not bringing in new audiences.

It doesn't help that a lot of PC based tech (Unreal engine, Cryengine, Source) that Western developers are familiar with but Eastern developer struggle with, have become established console development tools this gen.
