Why is there so much opposition to the SOPA bill? I must admit, I'm not hugely familiar with it?

1. US Copyright holders (i.e. major corporations) are allowed to petition the Justice Department to direct Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block websites they feel infringe upon their copyright. Not to dismantle the sites themselves, but merely to block them from USA access

2. ISPs will be required by law to do deep packet investigation of all upstream or downstream internet information

3. Any infringing activity will be criminally punishable

Now, not much sounds bad on the surface (though point 2 is worthy of alarm), but this means that websites all the world over are going to have to take strict measures to eliminate all use of non-approved material, or else they will be hunted down and banned from USA access, so even major international sites will have to follow these rules. Like that picture of the Atari 2600 in your avatar there? You take that stolen property of the Atari corporation away you dirty thief, or else VGChartz could be banned from US markets.
