Because the early earthquakes in Japan researchers had recorded radiation in Fukushima (more than 17 times the internationally recommended level for the general public).

Even some "experts" said the radiation could come to US too.

Actually, the radiation levels there aren't actually that bad. 17 times the international recommended level isn't that much. Pilots experience more than that over the course of their careers. Anyways, that wasn't the point.
