@Kyliedog

That means what? Do you know that most movie torrents are .avi files?

I guess SONY should pull support for those file types too huh?

What a weak defence.  .avi is used for many things.  .mkv is used in piracy and pretty much only that.

How is it weak? Weak because you say it is used mainly for piracy in movies?

Does not negate the fact that .avi is as well, if not more so for the same purpose.

Also, like I said, PS3 having Media server enables access to it anyways.

Also .mkv wasn't originally made popular because of piracy, but because it enabled Anime fans to enter subtitles into their movies, as well as chapters, etc... much like a DVD.

I do not see how your argument for why it isn't enabled holds water. Yeah you claim that it is mostly for piracy, but then what is the reasoning for allowing Divx, Avi, etc...? If .mkv isn't allowed you think that stops the pirates?

Hell,  the PS3 even allows for .mp4 files dude. That shit is hella popular in the mobile scene for pirating.

To put it simply, you can make arguments for why .avi is useful and you can make argument for why .mkv is useful.

You can make arguments for why .mkv is bad and you can make arguments for why .avi is bad.

In other words, my defense wasn't weak. In fact, your argument is weak. If we take your point of view on most things then Sony should just disable the ability to playback all media types, especially .mp3 since it is used mainly for piracy. Has been since the early days of Napster.

No more custom soundtracks during some of our games. To me it would suck, but you know what, it would be great. Sony just going on fighting the good fight am I right?

Yeah just ignore what I posted.  .avi used for mostly legit things, and also piracy.  .mkv used for piracy and not much else.  There is a very obvious difference between them especially in questioning Sony not wanting to support files types.

Your anime example is terrible since the biggest need for subs added to anime is so people can watch pirated fansubs online.  Anime released here in most cases offers dual langauges with sub options.

But let us pretend to live in a fantasy world where the most common and obvious use for something isn't ever used.

So why did Sony not support .avi originally?

Was it because at that time people used it more for pirating and then .mkv became popular and Sony no longer cared?

I doubt piracy is the reason for .mkv not being supported, however just keep going on and acting like my argument holds no truth. You still fail to answer to the fact that due to Media server the PS3 can play any form of media.
