In an Iwata Asks session, Miyamoto mentioned that he thinks that submarines are great:
"Don't you think submarines are great? They have lots of gimmicks, such as throwing out decoys or shooting torpedoes. It's like every man's dream to be able to pilot something like that." It turns out that he was waiting for a touch screen to create this game (Steel Diver), because he wanted to make a more realistic interface for the submarine. However, he got distracted by other projects, and decided that as the 3DS was finishing development, he felt that the water would look much nicer with real depth. Of course, the idea that the gyroscope can detect when you're turning your 3DS makes a difference to his decision too - and I think that it's an awesome idea. :P Do you believe that every man dreams of piloting a submarine?
