Well it's not like I've been closeted for my whole life or anything. It's fun to be part of a minority for once though, being the typical white boy from the suburbs that I am. ;)
It doesn't feel like it's a big deal where the whole family will rush to my side to either spit insults or pat my shoulder either, it's just something I need to let people know for whatever reason.
Point being, atheism is the religion of logic and scientific fact. There's no reason to be ashamed of what you are but it's still frightening when there are people out there who would stone you to death for what you believe in. I've read on forums about a particular girl who revealed to her family that she was an atheist and was essentially disowned and outcast as a godless heathen.
I know that won't happen to me because I know my family but it still leaves that creeping doubt fluttering around my gut. :)

Legally, it is. Or do you not want the same rights as everyone else? Being a former atheist, I always considered it was a religion.

"Religion" is just a fancy word for a conglomeration of ideas. Atheism would fit the bill.
