It's industry thinking getting too pervasive. It seems like everything out of these so-called struggling Japanese developers has to either be Okamiden or Enslaved: Journey to the West, something that can only possibly appeal in one region or the ohter, and that comes primarily from thinking of game design as a business, thinking demographically, and working towards targeted audiences.

 

Now, targeting audiences can work, but you have to be smart about it, but your prime projects should be ones that can reach across boundaries. I'm not speaking of accessibility in the sense of casual games too, but something as simple as games that can resonate thematically with both ends. Star Wars did a great job of that, as did Pokemon in its heyday
